He made a 2800 miles road trip with a friend and an NSX and recalls a similar trip made years ago in a Dino. It’s a great read:

It’s included in the above but here is a link to the article about the original trip as well:

Enjoy.

From the Dino article:

“Looking at the U.S. map, we decided to take the rugged northern route for the sheer adventure of battling the worst winter in over 100 years, rather than copping out and heading straight south. Our master plan was to drive through Iowa “because it’s in the way,” South Dakota to see the Badlands in winter, and Wyoming, Utah, Nevada and California for the mountain roads.”

This guy is my hero. And makes me feel like a panzie for taking the Southern route on my cross country journey because it was November and I MIGHT see snow along the way. And here I was in a Miata with perfectly functioning everything and an always connected navigation device constantly updating from a satellite.

I’ve always loved Egan’s writing. Easily my favorite part of R&T.

Mine too. I also found their massively outdated map in the era without cellphones or gps especially humorous.

All of his little quips are so damn hilarious haha. Idk how they even got anywhere with that map and how they didnt friggin freeze to death. But yeah the reliability of google maps makes driving places feel like cheating. All I have to do is not run out of gas and then I will never get lost with a phone. Sure you could find no service in some places but drive a bit and there is always a signal somewhere.
